TOKYO PHOTO was founded in 2009 to help establish an international photography market in Japan. The fair attracted approximately 5,000 visitors in 2009 and 10,000 visitors in 2010, and is set to attract 15,000 to 20,000 visitors this year. Along with the AIPAD Photography Show in New York and Paris Photo in Paris, TOKYO PHOTO has emerged as one of the most important art photo events on the global art circuit. This year Tate Modern’s curator of photography, Simon Baker, is organizing a photo exhibition of award winning British photographer Chris Shaw’s work at TOKYO PHOTO. Entitled “Life As a Night Porter,” the exhibition documents the unexpected human spectacles at London hotels through the intimate eyes of a hotel porter. The exhibition will also feature works by Japanese photographers who have had a significant influence on Chris Shaw. Simon Baker and Chris Shaw are scheduled to do a talk show on their collaborative show during the fair. The Embassy of France is also organizing a special charity photo exhibition featuring 8 artists from France and Japan who have visited and documented the devastation in post-earthquake northeast Japan.
